A conversation

“What are you doing to support your nutrition?” I asked.

“The oncology team recommended I drink this,” my patient said, handing me a popular meal replacement shake.

I could feel my face change before I even meant to. My patient noticed immediately.

“It's not very good, is it?”

“It isn't,” I said.

I'd like to say this was an isolated incident. It wasn't. It was the story of almost every cancer patient I see.

The problem

“Almost good enough” isn't good enough.

Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable people in care — and yet when it comes to nutrition, many are handed formulas that fail to address their fundamental needs.

The popular shakes are designed to hit calories. Not to support the complex metabolic realities of treatment. They are loaded with sugar, dairy proteins, and inflammatory omega-6 oils — the very inputs that activate insulin/IGF-1, mTOR, and the inflammatory and tumor-promoting pathways we spend each day trying to calm down.

For patients fighting for their lives, that's not a small problem.

There has to be something better than this.

Clinical innovation

Built on six clinical pillars.

Metabolica was treated like a complex cancer patient. Every nutrient had to earn its metabolic place — based on physiology, oncology logic, and real-world clinical experience.

01

Glucose restriction & insulin-IGF-1 modulation

Zero added sugar and a glycemic index under 15. Agave inulin and monk fruit replace maltodextrin and glucose syrup, lowering the insulinogenic signaling that drives mTOR and tumor proliferation.

02

Glutamine & protein modulation

A dual rice + pea protein blend supplies the essential amino acids at a moderate ~15 g per serving, with lower lysine and methionine than dairy — preserving lean tissue without activating anabolic drive.

03

Lipid & ketone-based metabolism

MCTs (C8/C10) and exogenous β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts deliver clean, non-glycemic energy that healthy cells use efficiently — encouraging mild, physiologic nutritional ketosis.

04

Inflammation & redox modulation

No omega-6 oils. No dairy. Berberine, cinnamon, ginger, and DGL soothe inflammation, regulate AMPK, and protect the gut mucosa — without disrupting drug metabolism.

05

Micronutrient balance & physiologic dosing

Iron and copper, known cofactors in angiogenesis and oxidative stress, are intentionally excluded. Magnesium, zinc, and selenium are dosed at physiologic levels — enough to support healthy metabolism, not enough to overstimulate growth.

06

Digestive support & patient tolerance

A blend of proteases, lipase, and carbohydrase improves absorption. Ginger, DGL, and agave inulin soothe the irritated gut common during chemotherapy. Free of dairy, soy, gluten, lactose, and artificial sweeteners.

How it compares

It doesn't.

Metabolica and the conventional shakes approach cancer nutrition in fundamentally opposite ways. Side-by-side, the design choices speak for themselves.

Built for every stage

From treatment day to long-term remission.

Each phase of cancer care brings its own metabolic challenges — mitochondrial fatigue, insulin resistance, GI fragility, sarcopenia. Metabolica is designed to support patients through all of them, under clinician supervision.

01 · Treatment

Chemotherapy & radiation

Non-glycemic MCT and BHB energy. Berberine and cinnamon support glycemic stability. Ginger and DGL help mitigate nausea and mucositis.

02 · Pre-Op

Pre-surgical optimization

Low-glycemic energy and balanced amino acids to support tissue stores without driving peri-operative hyperglycemia or anabolic excess.

03 · Post-Op

Post-surgical recovery

Rapidly absorbable MCT energy, micronutrients for collagen synthesis and immune competence, no dairy or maltodextrin to drive bloating.

04 · Long-term

Recovery & remission

Ketone-based energy for endurance and cognitive clarity. Low-glutamine plant proteins maintain muscle. Inulin restores microbiome balance.

Our story · part one

Nutrition has always been how I show love.

My two boys grew up watching me make smoothies. Some were genuinely delicious. Some were honestly awful. But they were always made with intention — and always made with love.

They also watched me do something that probably seemed unusual to most kids: I'd bring patients from the clinic back to our house and make them a real smoothie, right there in the kitchen.

Because feeding someone a nutritious meal is one of the ways I learned to show love. And my boys learned that too.

Then my practice changed, and the problem got bigger.

Our story · part two

The day it became real.

For years I searched. Every professional line. Every “medical nutrition” option. Anything I could white-label and stand behind. Nothing fit the bill. The ingredients were wrong. The metabolic logic was wrong. The compromises were everywhere.

Eventually I realized that if we wanted this to exist, we'd have to build it ourselves. And then, like most ambitious things, the dream sort of died. I was too busy. I didn't even know where to start.

Months later, driving with my oldest son Nick, he turned to me and said: “I found a lab that's willing to work with us — to develop your protein supplement for cancer.”

I tried to talk him out of it. He's blessed with my wife's patience. My youngest, Marcus, is blessed with my fire. Between the two of them, Metabolica stopped being a dream and became a project. A real one.

Three years. Many versions. Zero shortcuts.

Why it matters

This is personal.

Metabolica isn't a product we dreamed up for a market. It's a formula we built for the people we care for. It's the intersection of clinical work, family, and the belief that patients deserve better.

It is, in a very real sense, a continuation of what started in our kitchen years ago: a doctor trying to nourish people in the most human way he knows how.

A shake isn't a cure. But in cancer care, nutrition can be the difference between tolerating treatment and breaking under it. Between holding muscle and wasting away. Between resilience and decline. Small decisions compound.

Feed the patient, not the cancer.
